This medal is virtually identical to the Ashantee Medal slightly thinner and appears in bronze for native troops. The medal was not issued without clasp. Those who had received the Ashantee Medal 1873, with or without clasp ‘COOMASSIE’ were granted the appropriate clasp for further service in East and West Africa 1887-1900.

The greatest number of clasps known on one medal is seven.
