Obverse

First issue:  Has the Mural Crown with the inscription ‘JELLALABAD`

Second issue:  Young head of Queen Victoria with the legend ‘VICTORIA VINDEX` or ‘VICTORIA REGINA`

Reverse

First issue:  Has the date ‘VII APRIL 1842`

Second issue:  Winged figure of Victory with laurel wreath in her right hand and union jack in her left with the inscription ‘JELLALABAD VII APRIL’ at top and ‘MDCCXLII’ BELOW.

Naming

The first type was issued unnamed.

The second type is found with indented block letters.

Comments

The first issue was struck in Calcutta it soon became apparent  there was not enough medals produced to cover all those who were entitled and it was also felt  by the Governor General of India  that the first issue was too crude and need to be redesigned, The Second issue was made by W. Wyon and produced in London.

Of the second issue only a very few medals were struck with the legend ‘VICTORIA REGINA`
